June 3rd, 10am - LET'S GO BOTANY ON TIBBETTS ISLAND - Addison - Join botanist, Marilee Lovitt, and Donna Kausen on a botanical survey of Tibbetts. Bring your own small boat, canoe, or kayak to get to the island. Call 255-4500 for more info. FREE
June 9th, 1pm - PIKE LANDS BEACH CLEANUP - Lubec - Help us clean up the shores of this stunning shorefront for the summer season. We'll meet at 1pm and clear the shores of any marine debris brought in by the tides. Call Heather in the Machias office at 255-4500 or email heather@downeastcoastalconservancy.org to sign up and get directions.
June 12, 8 am - MOWRY BEACH BIRD WALK - Join us for a walk along the Mowry Beach Boardwalk Trail where we may encounter warblers, sparrows and maybe a shorebird or two. Bring along your binoculars. Meet at the parking lot, end of Pleasant Street (adjacent to the Lubec water treatment plant), 8 a.m. FREE
This event is currently postponed until Spring 2011. June 16th, 1pm - ORANGE RIVER LANDING CLEANUP - Whiting - Volunteer your time helping us to clean up this vital wildlife habitat along the Orange River.
June 19th, 10am - PIGEON HILL CELEBRATION HIKE - Steuben - Let's all celebrate the final steps in completing DCC'S preservation of Pigeon Hill. Craig Snapp will lead this trip. Meet at the parking lot. For more info call: 255-4500. FREE. Rain date: June 26
June 30th - WHIPPOORWILL MADNESS - Jonesport - Experience the magical songs of twilight and the night at Long House Farm. From hermit thrushes to coyotes, to owls to whippoorwills, this is the perfect time to experience these nesting songsters of the night. Meet at dusk, 7:30, to walk the old farming road to the screened camp house. Campfire treats, stories, coyote calls, and whippoorwill chorus desert. Open to all ages. July 8th - MOVIES FROM THE WILD SIDE - University of Maine at Machias, UMM - Join DCC for our 3rd consecutive year's popular movie series, introduced by Etta Abrahams. This year's showing, "EARTH", 7PM at the science building theatre. Free for children and students. Charge of $7 per adult supports costs of the DCC stewardship program.
July 16th 3-5 PM - WILD LANDSCAPES PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP - Tide Mill Creek, Jonesboro - Join popular photographers, Hoz Hosley and Craig Snapp, who know how to capture the beauty of our bays. Bring your own equipment and expect great photo tips. Meet at the Tide Mill Creek parking lot. More info at 255-4500. FREE. Rain Date July 17th.
July 24th, 8:30AM-1PM - SEA KAYAKING TO THE PETROGLYPHS - Machias Bay. Join DCC and Sunrise Canoe and Kayak to view the ancient petroglyphs etched into the eastern facing rocks of Machias Bay. These glyphs are inaccessible by land and are a beautiful example of our Washington County's pre-history. Trip is open to novice to proficient paddlers and includes all equipment needed. August 1st - THE ANNUAL DCC MEETING AND PICNIC - Roque Bluffs State Park. This pot luck party is the major annual event of Downeast Coastal Conservancy membership. It will include our annual meeting followed by music featuring the Black Socks String Music Band and great picnics. The bluffs create one of the finest sand beaches in Maine. Family perfect! Meeting at 2PM-3PM. Festivities beyond. Bring your favorite pot luck. FREE
August 11th - BEAVER MEADOW KAYAK / CANOE TRIP - Milbridge - This trip is open to members who have experience in paddling and will bring their own equipment. Canoes are also welcome! Our guide is Norm Richards who is very familiar with these beautiful waters. According to the tide, the time of leaving is 11:30AM. We'll return around 2pm. Bring your own lunch. FREE
August 14, noon - SHOREBIRDS BEACH WALK - Lubec - This is a good time to observe migrating shorebirds as they feed and rest along Mowry Beach. Bring your binoculars; we will provide a spotting scope. Meet at noon in the parking lot, end of Pleasant Street (adjacent to the Lubec water treatment plant). Call 255-4500 for more info. FREE
August 18th 8:30am-1pm - SEA KAYAKING IN COBSCOOK BAY - This trip is for novice to experienced paddlers led by Cobscook Hikes and Paddles Guide Service. All equipment is supplied by the guide service. Please bring your own lunch. Registration deadline: August 11. Max number of paddlers: 12. Cost: $50.
August 25th - 11AM to 3PM - LONGHOUSE WILD FRUITS AND JAM MAKING - Jonesport - Join Helen and Mo for old-timey picking and jam-making on the camp house wood stove. Expect to go home with jars of good eats and camaraderie. Great for kids and families. We will split the cost of jars and sugar. Bring your own picnic. FREE
September 7th, 7pm- MOVIES FROM THE WILD SIDE - Machias - UMM Science Bldg 102 - This DCC film presentation of OCEANS is a continuation of our popular DCC nature and science series. Etta Abrahams will introduce the film. Discussion will follow. Students free, Adults $7.
September 11th - BOATING EXPEDITION TO BROWNEY ISLAND - Jonesport - This is an all day trip to Browney Island. We will clean up the island, picnic, and include a natural history tour with Robert Miller. Please bring your own lunch. September 26th - HAWK WATCH FROM PIGEON HILL - Steuben - Ride the windy skies viewing the raptors pushed by strong northerly winds from Maine and Canada south along the eastern coastline in their annual fall migration. Join fellow birders for a Hawk Count of North America. The wide open views, the height of the hill, and the height of the season date should provide great sighting opportunities along this coastal fly way. Bring binoculars and your lunch. 10AM to 3PM.
