May 29 - North Woods Songsters of the Night - Jonesport
Experience the hoots, howls, whistles, and chorus of the night at Long House Farm. From whippoorwills to hermit thrushes to coyotes, we’ll enjoy – and maybe even join in – the din. Meet at dusk to walk the old farming road to a screened camp house. Campfire treats, stories, and dessert ensue. Bring a flashlight and warm layers. Time: 7:30 – 9:30 PM. June 4 - Plant Sale - Whiting
Calling all gardeners! After a year hiatus, the plant sale is back. This is your chance to re-stock your garden or exchange plants at very reasonable prices. Time: Friday, June 3, noon - 4 PM, drop off plant donations (or contact Sherrie and she will pick up your plant donations prior to June 3) Doors will open for the sale at 9 AM on June 4. We will be all finished by noon – so arrive early for best selection! Location: Whiting Town Office. June 8 - Meet Your Farmer - Machias
Come meet your local farmers at this fantastic event which will include a chance for you to sample produce from local farms, enjoy a screening of the film “Meet Your Farmer,” and stay for a panel discussion. This is a joint event coordinated by DCC, Maine Farmland Trust, Washington County Food and Fuel Alliance, and other community partners. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to meet your local farmer! June 11 - Mowry Beach Bird Walk - Lubec
Join DCC member and local birder Jennifer Multhopp for a walk along DCC’s Mowry Beach and the boardwalk trail where we will encounter warblers, sparrows, and other songsters, and hopefully some shorebirds as well. Bring along your binoculars. We will have two spotting scopes available. Time: 9 AM. Location: Meet at the parking lot end of Pleasant Street (adjacent to the water treatment plant). June 25 - Tibbett Island Stewardship Day – South Addison
Join DCC and the Maine Island Trail Association for an island cleanup and trail workday on Tibbett Island. Please arrange your own water transport to Tibbett Island (kayak, canoe, or small boat) from the South Addison Town Beach located at the end of Mooseneck Road. It’s a short paddle across the narrows. Bring a life vest, lunch, water, sun protection, work gloves, and trail tools. Help us make this island shine! Time: 10 AM. Location: Meet on Tibbett Island beach. July 2 - Fourth of July Kiosk - Jonesport
Drop by our kiosk and let Robert Miller share his wealth of information about land conservation in coastal Washington County. We’ll also have area hiking guides, a new brochure, and information on DCC’s new projects and volunteer opportunities. Time: 10 AM onward. Location: Tent behind the Jonesport library. July 9 (Rain date July 10) - Guided Sea Kayaking In Cobscook Bay – Edmunds
Join DCC, Maine Coast Heritage Trust, and Cobscook Hikes & Paddles on this trip highlighting our conservation partnership. Leaving from beautiful Cobscook Bay State Park, our outing will offer opportunities to take in the spectacular views of protected islands, coves, and reversing falls. We will take a break on DCC’s Bar Island in the heart of Cobscook Bay. This family-friendly trip (kids 6 years old and up) is limited to 24 participants. Please bring your own lunch, beverage, water shoes, and sun protection. Time: 10 AM – 2 PM. Registration & Info: Call Tess Ftorek at 207-726-4776 and register by July 2. July 10 - Fairy Festival at Longhouse Farm - Jonesport
Come celebrate the wedding of a long lost fairy princess and her true love. We will create the wedding and the place and the drama. Expect delicious cakes to be made in the woods, along with moss garlands and fairy houses, and of course the wedding itself. Any fairy supplies such as lace and ribbons, flowers, etc. that you can bring are welcome. Join Ella, Daisy, Juno and Dinah, ages 5-7 from Lubec for this great family event. Please bring your own lunch. Desert and refreshments provided. Time: 10 AM – 3 PM. Location: Long House Farm, 1620 Mason Bay Road, Jonesport. August 7 - Annual Meeting and Potluck Picnic - Roque Bluffs
This picnic party is the major annual event of Downeast Coastal Conservancy membership. See the Annual Meeting & Potluck Picnic notice in this newsletter for more info. Time & Location: Annual Meeting from 2 – 3 PM at the Roque Bluffs Community Chapel. Picnic festivities follow at the State Park beach until 5 PM. Information: Call DCC office – 207-255- 4500. August 20-21 - Machias Blueberry Festival – DCC Kiosk & Activity Center
Please come and join our creative activity center emphasizing storytelling, natural history games, painting, puppets and carpentry for kids along. We’ll also have area hiking guides, a new brochure, and information on DCC’s new projects and volunteer opportunities. Time: 9 AM – 5 PM both days. Location: Downtown Machias. September 17 - Coastal Cleanup

September 25 - Fall Migration Hawk Watch Pigeon Hill – Steuben
Ride the windy skies viewing the thousands of raptors pushed by strong northerly winds from Maine and Canada south along the eastern coastline in their annual fall migration. Join fellow birders for a Hawk Migration Association of North America hawk watch. The wide open views from Pigeon Hill at the peak of migration season should provide great sighting opportunities along this famous coastal fly way. Bring binoculars, water, and lunch. Time: 10 AM – 3 PM. Location: Meet at the Pigeon Hill Preserve parking lot, Pigeon Hill Road. Information: Call DCC office – 255-4500. Cost: FREE.
OCTOBER
October 1 - Fall Foliage Paddle on the Orange River - Whiting
Join DCC and Sunrise Canoe & Kayak for an exploration of the beautiful Orange River water trail. Novice to experienced paddlers welcome. View some DCC conserved lands and new DCC projects. Participation limited to 12 participants. Please bring your own lunch, beverage, water shoes, and sun protection. Time: 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Reservations & info: Call Sunrise Canoe & Kayak – 255-3375 by September 23. Cost: $60 per person includes kayak or canoe, equipment, instruction, and naturalist interpretation.
