Monitoring Season Kickoff

Join us as we Kickoff the 2012 Monitoring Season.  We'll be thanking our 2011 volunteers, going over monitoring procedures for the 2012 season and getting to know one another.  This is a great event for volunteers interested in becoming monitors to attend.  Light refreshments will be provided. 

Two Rivers Campaign:  Community Revitalization through Conservation Kick-off Event

Location:  Community Conference Room in the Kay Parker Building located at 26 Marshfield Road/Hadley Lake Road in Machias (http://g.co/maps/8t752)
Join DCC and the Community Committee as we kick-off the Two Rivers Campaign.  This community-led effort will conserve two remarkable properties on the Machias River and Middle River in the Machias Valley area totaling over 1,000 acres and 4.5 miles of shoreline.  The properties are connected by the Down East Sunrise Trail and are located within .5 miles of the hospital and schools.  The opportunities for long-term environmental education, outdoor recreation and community wellness are endless.  Please join us to learn more about this groundbreaking project. 

Trail Work Day

Meet at the South Addison Union Church (located on Mooseneck Road in the heart of South Addison)
Join us as we work on our newest trail.  Volunteers will split into several groups to help with a variety of tasks including:  cleaning up the trail and woods, clearing brush and hauling off cuttings, picking up trash and clearing around lilacs and apple trees to open up the old Ingersoll homesite.  Please bring your own work gloves, water and snack. 
Note:  If it is raining on May 19, this work day will be cancelled and re-scheduled for a later date.

Annual Plant Sale

Time:  9am  (we will be finished by noon, arrive early for best selection)
Location:  Whiting Community Building
Calling all gardeners!  The plant sale is back.  This is your chance to re-stock your garden or exchange plants at a very reasonable price. 
Plant Donation Information:  Plants may be dropped off at the DCC Office in Machias on Thursday, May 31 from 1pm-4pm and Friday June 1 from 9am-noon.  Plants may be brought to the Whiting Community Building on Friday, June 1 from 1pm-4pm. 

Pigeon Hill Silver Mine Trail Inauguration Celebration

Location:  Meet at the Pigeon Hill Trail Head, located on Pigeon Hill Road in Steuben
Join us as we celebrate the Inauguration of the Silver Mine Trail at Pigeon Hill.  The trail was completed mid-season 2011, but we wanted to have a proper celebration to recognize the hard work and volunteers who made this project possible.  Pigeon Hill is a well known gem in Washington County, please join us to celebrate the new trail.

Tibbett Island Stewardship Day
Date:  Saturday, June 23, 2012
Time:  9am
Location:  Meet at the South Addison Town Beach, located at the end of Mooseneck Road.  From there, it's a short paddle to the island.
Join DCC and the Maine Island Trail Association for an island clean up and work day on Tibbett Island.  Please arrange your own water transport to Tibbett Island (kayak, canoe or small boat).  Bring a life vest, lunch, water, sun protection and work gloves.  Help us make this island shine!


Machias River Paddle

Reservations and Information:  Call Sunrise Canoe and Kayak 207-255-3375 by June 22, 2012
Cost:  $60 (includes kayak or canoe, equipment, instruction and naturalist interpretation)
Join DCC and Sunrise Canoe and Kayak as we explore the Machis River.  Novice to experienced paddlers welcome.  This is a great opportunity to explore one of our new Machias area projects.  Please bring your own lunch, beverage, water shoes and sun protection. 

Fairy Festival

Reservations and Information:  This event is limited to 20, including adults,  please call before July 5 to reserve a place.  After June 5, contact Helen Waite 207-497-5734.  Prior to June 5, contact the DCC Office
We are calling our young Downeast Fairies to come to the Long House Farm to join a new year of Fairy Festival events including, exploring for fairies and their enchanged places, costuming, playmaing (new play), picnicking, dancing, woodstove fairy cake making and general magic.  Children are welcome with parent or guardian.  We will provide refreshments and other materials, but please bring your own picnic, water bottle and any extra costuming matrials you want.  Rest time and shelter also provided but most of the time we'll be playing by the woodsy brook. 

Annual Meeting
Date:  Sunday, August 5, 2012
Time:  2:00pm
Location:  The meeting will be held in the Roque Bluffs Community Chapel (3 Schoppee Point Road in Roque Bluffs).  Picnic festivities will be at the State Park Beach. 
We're going Caribbean this year!  Join us for the DCC Annual Meeting and Picnic with island flair.  The meeting will be at 2pm in the Roque Bluffs Community Chapel.  Members will report on the land trust's recent activities and will elect Directors to DCC's Board of Directors.  We welcome member comments at the meeting.  A Caribbean themed potluck picnic will immediately follow the Annual Meeting at the nearby Roque Bluffs State Park.  Enjoy the beach and pond, hiking trails and great conversation.  Please bring your favorite dish to share and lawn chairs or picnic blankets.  State Park regulations prohibit alcoholic beverages. 

Drisko Marsh Walk

Join Marilee Lovitt on an interpretive hike at Drisko Marsh.  This is a great opportunity to explore one of our marsh properties.  Please wear appropriate footwear for the marsh, as conditions may be wet.  In additon to the hike around the property, there is a 1 mile round trip hike fromthe parking area to the Drisko Marsh property.  Please bring your own water, snack and sun protection. 

Biolum Sea Kayaking
Date:  Friday, August 10, 2012
Time:  7pm-10pm
Location:  Meet at the Edmunds Public Boat Launch. 
Reservations and Information:  Call Cobscook Hikes and Paddles at 207-726-4776  by August 3, 2012
Cost:  $40 per person includes kayak, equipment, instruction and naturalist interpretation.
Join DCC and Cobscook Hikes and Paddles for an evening of fun on the water.  Watch as the bioluminescent organisims sparkle like diamonds as they drip from your paddle.  This family friendly trip is open to ages 12 and up, and is limited to 12 participants.  Wear layers as it cools off after the sun sets.  Please bring your own water shoes, small flashlight or headlamp, water and snack. 

Machias Wild Blueberry Festival
Date:  Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19, 2012
Time:  9am-5pm both days
Location:  Downtown Machias
Come see us at the Blueberry Festival.  We'll have a booth set up with information as well as birdhouse building and other activities for the kids. 

Shorebirds and Songsters at Mowry Beach
Date:  Saturday, August 25, 2012
Time:  8am
Location:  Meet at the Mowry Beach parking area at the end of Pleasant Street in Lubec.
Join local birder Jennifer Multhopp to walk on the beach and boardwalk for fine views of shorebirds, warblers and many other buzzers and tweeters in the warm sun of the brush alders, dunes and marshes flanking the beach.  Bring your binoculars and bird guides, two spotting scopes will be available. 

Fall Foliage Paddle on the Orange River
Date:  Saturday, October 6, 2012
Time:  8:30am-12:30pm

Trail Work Days and Property Cleanup
